Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 and died in 1616. He was the son of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. He studied in the free grammar school until he was 15, and studied Latin, Mythology, Ovid... When he was 18 years old he married Anne Hathaway and had three children: Susanna, Hamnet and Judith (twins). He went to London to work as an actor and a writer and, in 1599, the Globe Theatre was built. In this theatre many of his plays were represented but in 1613 the theatre was destroyed by a fire (it was reconstructed in 1997 so you can still go to see his plays).

He wrote many plays and sonnets but only 38 plays and 154 sonnets have been conserved. He's one of the most famous playwrights and writers/poets in all the world. His plays have been traduced to lots and lots of languages and are still played in theatres all around the world.

Some of his most famous plays are: Romeo and Juliet (a story about how love can be stronger than hate and the suicide for love), Hamlet (a story of the revenge), The Merchant of Venice (a story about debts and love), A Midsummer Night's Dream (a funny story about love)...
